My gym acquired new equipment recently. The gym was closed for a week while it was installed. We were all wondering how it would work out. Better machines, more space, different colours...

I ran into Joe in the change room shortly there after. Joe is blind. He comes in and works out while his seeing-eye-dog lies to the side sleeping. It dawned on me how the complete disruption of the gym's layout might hamper Joes movement within. He agreed, it was a huge deal for him.

Roland of Politique asked if I'd shoot some photos for their upcoming album release.

We decided to shoot on a downtown Ottawa rooftop, natural light and a reflector. We did get some good shots. Roland kindly dropped off the CD on my doorstep yesterday. Looks fantastic. You've got to checkout some of the reviews of the album.

I have always liked change. I drive down different streets to get to the same place, order something new on the menu, look up words in the dictionary as future literary fodder. Try to keep the mind working and thinking. Mix it up.

My right shoulder is sore from a gym injury. It is now easier to put on a shirt or jacket right-arm-first. My usual technique, as I've found out having become cognizant of my actions via this injury, is left-arm-first. Try it. Which ever way you dress, reverse it. Let me know.

Cut the Cable

At the gym yesterday I fell into a wonderful verbal intercourse.

It varied in subject matter and passion, over a forty minute cardiovascular extravaganza.

We spoke of aging, tai chi, children and childishness. It was about walking down the street without a smart phone, without looking at an electronic device in your hand, without being distracted.

She spoke of walking the dogs in the morning and focusing on the sound of her feet smusching the grass beneath her. I spoke of running and listening only to my breath and the pattern of my feet hitting the ground.

I told her about walking Bloor Street in Toronto with camera in hand, taking photos as I went, waiting for a moment to unfold before me. Allowing it to happen. Not expecting it but waiting patiently.

I think our discussion started after I mentioned that we had cut off "The Cable". We had the most basic package. A few channels. A bit of a distraction at the end of a long day. But the supply of entertainment was disappointing. Of the 50 something channels we received, we might watch 5. And we wasted valuable time.

The lack of TV, the putting in the back pocket of the cell phone device, the cutting off, is very exciting.

I find myself sitting on the back deck looking up at the night sky.

There is something different about listening to the radio on a small, close device versus a stereo with speakers somewhere in the room. I am not commenting on audio quality in a technical sense but more the intangible vibe of the experience. The small, close radio is like moving closer to a friend's face when they are speaking, as if they are whispering.

I was asked to photograph Veronica Tennant. I spent a portion of the day in the National Ballet School in Toronto with her. I was using a Rolleiflex, a 12 frame camera, twelve pictures, and then you'd have to change the roll of film. Film.

She asked me what exactly I'd like her to do. A pirouette on this spot or that, a spin, a twist. What the hell did I know?

What I did know, learn, from that experience, being sprawled on the floor, 12 inches away from one of the worlds most prestigious ballerina's feet, was the incredible artistry of her dance.

I definitely knew nothing about ballet. But she was so patient with me. She allowed me the time to change rolls. To adjust focus as she spun so quickly.

I went "ah".

Like studying Dali at Ryerson, and not getting it, studying from a book, black and white, until standing before a Dali painting at the Tate in London two years later. Standing before that painting, and going, "ah".

I recently was asked to create a video of John Geggie and his most recent ensemble of musicians at the National Arts Centre. I enjoy Jazz. I have many Jazz records. But until I saw, witnessed, videotaped, this group of musicians, I did not get it.

The Wrong Way

I got to the gym this morning, and the gentleman sitting at his locker across from me was putting on his socks and shoes. He put on his left sock, then his left shoe and was starting on the right foot when I asked him if he always did it that way. I mentioned an old All In The Family episode where Archie is upset at Meathead for putting his socks and shoes on this way, the wrong way.

The gentleman then told me how his wife puts the toilet paper with the paper feeding the wrong way, from the back of the roll.

Our conversation then moved to other fun tidbits about common martial discord triggers with other partially dressed men gleefully joining in. Never a dull moment in my life.

Elmdale Tavern

Went to the Elmdale Tavern last night to see Rocket Rached perform. Fantastic show. The Mighty Popo played guitar on a few songs.

One thing that struck me was how when the band members were playing their solos, their eyes closed, and they went to their "happy place". They drifted off. It reminded me of when I would go into the darkroom and work for hours and hours on a single print. Time became irrelevant, shifted, drifted. Now when I'm cutting a piece of video, same. Working back and forth across the timeline, moving seconds of content left or right. Hours go by. These wonderful musicians off somewhere I cannot understand. It's beautiful to witness.

An old friend from our Toronto film and television days is staying with us. In the usual walk-down-memory-lane conversations we touched on Kids In the Hall, which Jolynn worked on. We pulled out an old photo album, from the days when we used "film" to take photographs. I scanned some images from the night Douglas Coupland, Jolynn and I went to see their Vancouver stage show. Doug was a huge fan and asked Jo to get tickets, which she did. Fun or what? Drinkin' beer backstage with "The Kids" after the show.

When a friend of mine puts fuel in his car, he fills the tank half full. He contends that he gets better gas mileage because of the weight of the fuel. Or the lack of weight from the lack of fuel. I am not convinced.

In researching this I am amazed at how popular a Google subject this is. There is a group of people called Hypermilers. Here's a YouTube video on the subject.

Another site that did an experiment on this subject came to these conclusions:

Snap from Britanna Bay

I got all excited the other morning. The radio told me that there was fog hovering shamelessly in the west end of the city leading traffic astray. I threw some camera gear in the truck and headed out. As Lemon would say, "I want to go to there".

There is something about inclement weather that makes me crazy excited. Thunderstorms are the best. I think it may have to do with the fact that it is, debatably, one of the last things we humans can control/cajole. Although China's Beijing Weather Modification Office seems to be willing to mess with that. But I digress.

So there I am, in a deep mist, wandering around looking for something to shoot, big honking video camera in hand, tripod in tow, no one around, and a stranger approaches, binoculars in hand, birder hat on head. He's on a sandpiper hunt. Apparently there are purple sandpipers in the hood. They only stop on this spit of land perched on the shore of the Ottawa River when the weather gets ugly. They take advantage of the nasty weather to rest and feed, then head out. There's a metaphor there somewhere.

In researching fog I found this chart. It describes the frequency and intensity of fog in North Bay. Apparently there are people that are as interested in fog as I am, times a billion.

A cloud may be considered partly fog; for example, the part of a cloud that is suspended in the air above the ground is not considered fog, whereas the part of the cloud that comes in contact with higher ground is considered fog. I took this Sunday outside Remi's apartment. The fall light in Ottawa is distinctive. I heard a radio story about how Ojibway's can be taken back mentally to another time by the quality of light, much like an old song will remind you of something or someone from decades before.

What are the odds of inserting a plug into a socket on the first attempt? Common sense and calculations agree that they are 50%.

There is a mathematical formula. The following is a calculation for attempting three times to insert it correctly:

0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.125 or 12 1/2%

So why then 9 times out of ten am I unsuccessful?

Lessons Learned - "Command Z"

Doug's first book Generation X was just getting legs when I first saw his suspicious face peek out of his penthouse apartment door. I had bags of photographic equipment under arm that had began to slip as I made my way from the top floor that the elevator reached, to the penthouse. To get to the penthouse you had to climb, fifteen steps as I remember. I was there on behalf of Saturday Magazine to take Doug's portrait.

Sometime later I was at Doug's apartment. He had a huge colour Canon printer, a Fiery, in his living room, that his brother had lent him for an indefinite period of time. Doug was screwing around with his Mac and QuarkXPress printing out countless copies of his creations. He showed me Quark shortcuts and how to have fun with a computer.

His motto was, if you don't like what you've just done, Command Z.

He steals his roommate's van, drives across town and walks up to my door with two beautiful beautiful prints precariously perched under his freakishly long arms.

Photographs of PEI. Rémi is from there. My Mother is from there. I lived there. Atlantic air smells different than Pacific. The salmon tastes different. These photographs are beautiful.

I stepped up to the plate recently. My daughter is going to high school. She has to take the bus. Across town. Alone. I said I'd ride with her once before school started to teach her bus etiquette and navigational techniques.

The two images below are from the two bus stops where we got off the bus before we should have, upon my insistence.

It was the second premature bus departure where she snatched my carefully printed and yellow high lighted google maps and transit system schedules from my hand and said, "I'll take it from here."

Dinner

Working late. Family away. Dinner.

Went to the garden. I have always had a vegetable garden, however humble. From a roof top balcony in a Toronto penthouse to our sprawling Westboro backyard. My father was the youngest of thirteen children born on a farm in southern Manitoba so growing up our family always had a garden, even if it meant only tomatoes and cucumbers in the busier years.

I picked carrots this evening.

I think this adds a sense of scale.

Years ago an old friend Chetan Rajani taught me how to eat corn Indian style. Lemon (no lemon so lime worked) and paprika. Really good. I think it might turn you away from butter and salt.

Continuing on the Indian theme I tossed a small chicken breast and thinly sliced potatoes, with olive oil and a big chunk of basil from the garden into some tin foil and tossed it on the barbecue. Oh yeah, and a tablespoon of bottled Indian spice from the best Indian food store in Ottawa, on the south west corner of Somerset and Booth.

Photo of dinner coming off the barbecue. Did I mention it hit 32 degrees C here today? I try not to put on the air conditioning unless absolutely necessary, so cooking indoors is not an option.

Unless the temperature hits 33 degrees C. Let's talk tomorrow.

One woman's sign of aging

At the gym this morning I was on a matt beside a woman. I've spoken to her often. Today she told me about the day that she lost her attractiveness. She had walked by a building site and not a single construction worker called out rude comments.

When she got home that day she told her husband, and he shrugged.

She's probably sixty now, so I assume it was thirty or more years ago. But when she told me it was as if it had happened yesterday.

When I was a kid I built model airplanes. My father was a flight lieutenant in the Canadian Airforce. One of my favourite airplanes and the first model making kit I purchased with my meager allowance was the Spitfire. The photos below are of me sitting in a Spitfire this evening. I've written a review. It talks about using the Canon 5D Mark 2 with the H4n audio recorder. Thrilling, right? It's kind of exciting to me. I used to take a lot of photographs for magazines where they'd print your name in small text in the gutter, and I'd always be excited to see the spread. Same here. But different.

I've been reading the reviews and articles from this site [www.kenstone.net] for years and have learned tons. A great resource, and Ken is fantastic.

Big vs. Small, Fast vs. Slow

I recently replaced my 8 mp camera with a 21 mp model.

While shooting some photos for a client last week I realized my memory cards hold 75% fewer photos — 140.

After moving to digital photography I have become accustomed to shooting more, thinking less. We used to use a light meter and polaroid film to check exposure, light balance and composition. Now it's a cursory glace at the small screen at the back of the camera.

So I could only take 140 photographs. I thought more about each image, looked harder, shot slower. Each shot became a polaroid that I calmly studied and decided if the exposure and composition were successful. I deleted and reshot and slowed down.

I rented a video camera on the weekend. I was running tests for an upcoming video shoot with Daniel Alfredsson. No Danny looks nothing like Zoe.

Google has been taking photographs of streets all around the world.

As I was leaving my house, walking down the front steps towards the street, fumbling to catch my iPhone and making a very strange face I'm sure, a Google car drove by and snapped my photo.

Can't wait for that to appear. Let's hope the face blurring technology works.

The Garden

Irene came today to plant the vegetable garden. Earlier in the day she refused a "shanty", a mixture of beer and ginger ale, expressing the fact that it might hinder her efficiency. Finally toward the end of the day she succumbed. Empty glass as proof behind her right leg. The garden is in!
